Drums or Guitar
 

(Sorry for long post )

My mate and i ( lets call him Luke) are starting up a band with some of his mates and he wants me to play drums but i am not sure about it as i've always wanted to be a guitarist ive played both instruments ive played acoustic guitar and i was pretty good at it i never found it difficult but never really enjoyed it as it didn't have the same sound and feel as i thought an electric guitar would though ive never played it before, but a week ago i was at a friends house with Luke and he had brought his guitar over ( hes really good ) and my mates brother had a drum set so we put on some songs and he would play guitar and id muck around on the drums , we then tried to play Smells like teen spirit and soon i had got half the song figured out , my friend was really amazed and so we spent the rest of the day playing some other songs , i had a better time than i had ever had on guitar but am still reluctant because i still think i would love guitar and would like to also sing in the band but i don't feel as though i can do that playing on the drums . What should i do?

Play drums in this one and guitar in another bands? You don't have to stick to one thing forever.

I agree with Toretorden,

try not to view bands as anything bonding or exclusive. Maybe try to look at them as "projects" and you'll find that your options are infinite. Sure you can play drums with this group, but that shouldn't prevent you from pursuing your desire to play guitar.

absolutely agree 100%.

it seems to be a common idea for young musicians to view being in a band as some sort of extra exclusive family unit. it's not. the sooner everyone gets over that the sooner things go smoother. there's nothing wrong with playing in multiple bands, and there's nothing wrong with being more dedicated to one project over the other - just be honest with everyone involved.

also, just because you're in one group with specific people does NOT mean they'll necessarily be willing to follow you into a different type of group (i've literally spent every other meeting with a drummer trying to get him to understand this - for the last 10 years...)

in short, don't treat your band like a girlfriend.

Thank you for you for advice have decided with mates that i will sing for now and after i get good enough with guitar i might do that as well , i will also not try to take this band too seriously and will just treat it as a project or experiment.
