Default Learning keyboard for metal songs

Hi everyone, I'm new to this forum and I hope this is in the correct sub forum.

So, i've been listening to symphonic metal bands like nightwish, amberian dawn and within temptation for the past year and i realized that i particularly like the keyboard parts of the songs, like the start of dead to the world, moondance e.t.c

Therefore, i've been thinking to learn the keyboard, but i have no history with any musical instruments before. I heard from a friend that there is pop keyboard and classical keyboard, which one should i learn?

The most obvious way to start would probably to sign up for a course in some music school like yamaha, but i'm new to learning musical instruments so would like to hear some advice from people who play keyboard, like maybe share about how u started learning(self taught or with a teacher) e.t.c

Pls advice thnx

I'd say take some lessons, either in a classroom setting or private one on one situations.

I managed to teach myself how to play guitar and bass through magazines. I tried teaching myself keyboards a few years later and failed miserably even though I understood a fair amount of the concepts and theory.

As for the difference between pop and classical keyboard... I'm not really sure what your friend was talking about. Ultimately it's stylistic difference, it's still the same instrument, still black and white keys, still pressed with fingers. I'd suggest learning the classical stuff since you'd likely learn a bunch more theory and technique that would apply itself to symphonic metal.

I think "classical keyboard" is more like traditional piano. And "pop keyboard" is exactly as it sounds. So a stylistic difference like Dave said. I had to learn a little bit of keyboard for school (part of my degree requirement) and I won't lie, it is challenging even of you are like me and have been reading and playing music for 15 years. But it's not impossible. I think, to start, the best thing to do is look online and in music stores for books that will teach you the very basics of keyboard. Just a generic method book for now. Once you think you've got the hang of it, move up to the next book and also start playing stuff on your own (improvisation). Improvising and also imitating the songs you want to play can help you get the feel for the type of music it is (in this case, metal). If you need some help or recommendations just post here again.
