Music Help, Survey Studies, Poster Wants, Music Sheets Thread.

Hi all. I am desperately looking for the poster which has someone stood on land putting a finger up to the law on the other side of the crack in the earth. I am sure you know which poster I am talking about. I have searched everywhere online and can't seem to find one for sale. I take it you can still get this poster.

Any insight into this query would be appreciated.

Many thanks.

Need help with my Master's thesis - how environment affects songwriting/recording

I'm going to soon start working on my Master's thesis, and as an Interior Design student with a background in music journalism, I've decided to combine the best of both worlds. I'm really fascinated with how musicians seek alternative environments to write/record music. I've noticed a trend in recent years of bands straying away from the confines of a huge, elaborate studio in Los Angeles and instead opting for a more untraditional place to work on their music.

Some examples that I've already found are...

*Grizzly Bear cut some Veckatimest tracks in old, weathered church in Brooklyn (the rest were recorded in the singer's house in Cape Cod)

* Death Cab for Cutie recorded some material for Plans in a barn at Longview Farms, North Brookfield, MA

*Mike Kinsella (Owen) records the majority of his music in the basement of his mom's house

*a fantastic Radiohead clip where Thom Yorke says "To me the environment in which one records is the only thing that matters..."

This is just a rough concept, it definitely needs to be tweaked and more defined. I am just fascinated with how musicians' creativity during the songwriting/recording process is influenced by where they are and choose to be. If you have any information or can point me to any articles/videos of bands talking about recording in an unconventional environment, I'd really appreciate the help!

Help with name of a band??

Hello. I just got back from Japan and on the same flight I was on, going from Tokyo to US, there was a band. I chatted with them and they were super nice, but i didnt catch their name. I was too shy to ask any questions. :-) But I did overhear one of the band members saying they were all actually from different bands and they got together and were doing shows. Some of the names mentioned were Dokken (I think), Ratt, Powerman 5000 and Soulfly. Does anyone know about members from these bands (plus a few others) that formed another band and recently played in Japan? Im so curious as to who all I was chatting with (for like 2 minutes). Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!!

Music Schools, Recommedations ?

Hi ! Im 20 years old now, and have decided to study contemporary music on some University in Some city, but Not in Sweden, where I live now! There are Sooo many schools around the world, and I cant really sort them, have heard so mutch about MI and Berklee, but I would like to study somewhere in Europe, since USA is the most expensive place ? I dont know.. Ive been looking at Tech Music Schools too, It seems cool. So my Question is, Can you recommend any Music Education for a guitarplayer who likes to play almost everything, but is specialized around pop/rock music ? No classical education, and not any 100% jazz nerdy stuff either. :) Very thankful for answeres ! Thanks for youre time.

Why do you listen to Metal?

If you could answer these questions you'd do me a massive favor, it's for my A Level Coursework research:

1. What do you think of Heavy metal/screamo/death metal/etc. (basiclly anything of the heavier persuasion)?

2. Do you listen to metal?

2a. [If yes] Why do you enjoy it?

2b. [if no] What are your reasons, beyond not liking it?

3. Do you agree that heavy music makes it's listeners more prone to violent thoughts and/or actions? Why?

4. Do you agree with the idea that anyone who watches violent music videos along with the violent song will become, themselves, more violent to them or others?

5. Do you think that Marilyn Manson's music videos are too violently and sexually explicit?

6. If you pass a person on the street who is heavily tattooed and pierced and is wearing an all black outfit consiting mostly of studs/leather do you feel slightly intmidated?

If you could answer these questions it would be a MASSIVE help, really! If you could answer as detailed as possible that would also be great. I need the most honest views you can give.

Thanks.

1) Metal is great. Most of the time. Like any other genre there are good and bad artists. But I am a fan.

2) Yes, obviously. I like it because it's loud and aggressive, like me. It doesn't take itself too seriously, like me.

3) Hell no. I've been a metal fan since I was 12, and never been in a fight (That's 16 years, if you're counting....)

4) No. It's all about your predisposition. If you're a violent person by nature, you may seek out those sorts of videos as a way to vent, or if you're really ****ed up, as a way to get ideas. But the music and videos don't make you violent.

5) Manson is a big teddy bear. Look at Cannibal Corpse, Deicide, or any other death metal band if you want violence..... hell, look up "Disposal of the Body lyrics" on google, then tell me Manson is violent ;)

6) **** no. I'll ask them where they got their ink done. People with tattoos are people too, just cooler ;)

Muzak 01-26-2010 09:54 PM

1. What do you think of Heavy metal/screamo/death metal/etc. (basiclly anything of the heavier persuasion)?

Metal is awesome.

2. Do you listen to metal?

Yes
2a. [If yes] Why do you enjoy it?

Because its one of the more explorative genres out there in styles and musical ideas. Also because its strong energetic music that I can listen to when I want to get pumped.

3. Do you agree that heavy music makes it's listeners more prone to violent thoughts and/or actions? Why?

In a way, they might be more prone to violent thoughts due to the lyrical content but nothing beyond that.

4. Do you agree with the idea that anyone who watches violent music videos along with the violent song will become, themselves, more violent to them or others?

No. The music doesn't make people violent. When people going on killing sprees, it was because they were messed up already, not because of what they listen to.

5. Do you think that Marilyn Manson's music videos are too violently and sexually explicit?
no, its his right as an artist to showcase any images he wants in his music video.

6. If you pass a person on the street who is heavily tattooed and pierced and is wearing an all black outfit consiting mostly of studs/leather do you feel slightly intmidated?

I would definitely notice them but not really intimidated. Especially considering all the loser goth kids these days.

1. What do you think of Heavy metal/screamo/death metal/etc. (basiclly anything of the heavier persuasion)?
It's great.. well.. I only deal with Black Metal and some Death Metal (which are fantastic).

2. Do you listen to metal?
Black metal and maybe Death metal sometimes but not often

2a. [If yes] Why do you enjoy it?
Its very atmosphere! I've always been fascinated by dark imagery and things of the like since I was a kid

2b. [if no] What are your reasons, beyond not liking it?

3. Do you agree that heavy music makes it's listeners more prone to violent thoughts and/or actions? Why?
Violent thoughts perhaps, but only violent people would act on them.

4. Do you agree with the idea that anyone who watches violent music videos along with the violent song will become, themselves, more violent to them or others?
No because a violent person will be violent regardless of their music choice.

5. Do you think that Marilyn Manson's music videos are too violently and sexually explicit?
Art isn't safe. If you don't like them then don't watch them.

6. If you pass a person on the street who is heavily tattooed and pierced and is wearing an all black outfit consiting mostly of studs/leather do you feel slightly intmidated?
Not at all. It's just how they look.

1. What do you think of Heavy metal/screamo/death metal/etc. (basiclly anything of the heavier persuasion)? Heavy Metal is a genre I love in general but not all types. I don`t particuarly like Industrial, Gothic, Symphonic or Black but that`s not to say that I won`t listen to them.

2. Do you listen to metal? Nearly every day, but also lots of other types of music as well.

2a. [If yes] Why do you enjoy it? Like most the power, intensity and heaviness along with the musical ability of certain groups.

2b. [if no] What are your reasons, beyond not liking it?

3. Do you agree that heavy music makes it's listeners more prone to violent thoughts and/or actions? Why? Not really, the only thing that makes me violent and angry are computer games but certainly not music.

4. Do you agree with the idea that anyone who watches violent music videos along with the violent song will become, themselves, more violent to them or others? Certain people will be prone to this but the vast majority of people no

5. Do you think that Marilyn Manson's music videos are too violently and sexually explicit? I think they are but they in line with current video/film trends.

6. If you pass a person on the street who is heavily tattooed and pierced and is wearing an all black outfit consiting mostly of studs/leather do you feel slightly intmidated? Certainly not but most people probably would be.

If you could answer these questions it would be a MASSIVE help, really! If you could answer as detailed as possible that would also be great. I need the most honest views you can give.

Hope this was of some use.

To sum up the question "Why do you listen to metal ?", because it has a certain power in it that's not in all music

It's good music if you're in the right mood for it (for the most part anyways)

2. Do you listen to metal?

Yes, I listen to metal sometimes

2a. [If yes] Why do you enjoy it?

Sometimes, you just need something to throw away you're anger. Sometimes, You need music that isn't about how perfect the world is (it's not) but deals with the cons of this world. I mean, happy lyrics and happy music arn't necisarrily bad, but metal can just make you feel empowered to deal with the world. Plus, it can make you feel like you're just plain awesome no matter how stupid you really are (I have low self-esteem)
2b. [if no] What are your reasons, beyond not liking it?

3. Do you agree that heavy music makes it's listeners more prone to violent thoughts and/or actions? Why?

On a minor level, yes, maybe, but not on a major level. People who commit suicide, become killers etc. etc. because of metal are just plain ****ed up. If you've been getting angrier more because of metal, maybe you should cut down on it just a bit, but it doesn't have as much of an influence as some like to pretend
4. Do you agree with the idea that anyone who watches violent music videos along with the violent song will become, themselves, more violent to them or others?

The video has no more influence then the song. See #3.

5. Do you think that Marilyn Manson's music videos are too violently and sexually explicit?

I don't know much of the work of Marilyn Manson. I can't answer that question

6. If you pass a person on the street who is heavily tattooed and pierced and is wearing an all black outfit consiting mostly of studs/leather do you feel slightly intmidated?

It depends on the person

If you could answer these questions it would be a MASSIVE help, really! If you could answer as detailed as possible that would also be great. I need the most honest views you can give.

Thanks.

identifying style/instrument

youtube.com/watch?v=RBQIx5jiTsg

i've heard this style of play once before, so I can only assume it's a specific playing method, however I haven't heard it very much and am really curious what it would be called. originally I guessed that this was being played on just a guitar, but the more I listen to it the more it seems like it could possibly even be a different stringed instrument of some sort.

mr dave 01-31-2010 03:11 PM

the style is called hipster nerd on an acousitc guitar sped up to sound like tiny tim and his ukulele.

Chainsawkitten 05-08-2010 04:45 PM

What music genre would you say this is?
MP3: Pseudorandom - Infinity (2010).zip
Youtube playlist: YouTube - Broadcast Yourself.

A friend mentioned Darkwave, could that be correct?

(I wouldn't say the first track, Feast, is representative for the album as a whole. Any of the other tracks would probably give a better hint.)

I recorded this album but I have absolutely no idéa what genre it would go under. Not because I imagine it as particularly hard to categorize, just cause I suck at music genres.

Note: I own all the rights to this release. No piracy here.

Class in popular music

Hello. I am a college music student who is currently in the process of writing a piece about social and economic class in popular music. As part of this project I am asking a series of questions related to class in popular music. Long and short answers are both acceptable.

1. Do you consider class an important element in popular music?

2. Do you believe it is easier/harder for a musician from a poorer economic background to succeed?

3. Can a poor musician who attains fame and fortune remain “true” to his roots?

4. Is class a relevant theme in modern popular music?

5. Do you consider wealth a common lyrical topic in popular music?

Thank you for your time.

mr dave 05-13-2010 05:58 PM

1. Do you consider class an important element in popular music?

personally, no.

2. Do you believe it is easier/harder for a musician from a poorer economic background to succeed?

absolutely not, if anything i think it's easier for a good musician to come from a poorer economic background as they'll have less distractions from their instrument. they'll likely know how to make the most of what they have and won't get suckered into the bogus idea of 'needing' that next fancy piece of gear to sound 'good'.

3. Can a poor musician who attains fame and fortune remain “true” to his roots?

depends on whether or not they've learned humility before entering the spotlight.

4. Is class a relevant theme in modern popular music?

only to idiots.

5. Do you consider wealth a common lyrical topic in popular music?

does kesha spell her name with a dollar sign?

1. Do you consider class an important element in popular music?

No. A talented musician is a talented musician.

2. Do you believe it is easier/harder for a musician from a poorer economic background to succeed?
It has to be harder. You have less exposure to gear, recording software etc. etc.

3. Can a poor musician who attains fame and fortune remain “true” to his roots?

Yes. While it is almost impossible not to care about money after making millions of dollars, artists can still stay true. It's very, very rare for an artist to stay true, but's it's not impossible.

4. Is class a relevant theme in modern popular music?

I think people who sing about how rich/poor they are, are awful lyricists. Nuff said.

5. Do you consider wealth a common lyrical topic in popular music?

Too common

Thank you for your time.

It Takes A Lot To Laugh, It Takes A Train To Cry

Hey. Im new here and me and my girlfriend are trying to learn this song together.

The song is It Takes A Lot To Laugh, It Takes A Train To Cry by Bob Dylan. The version is the Bootleg series 2 version, its a sort of shuffle blues.
Neither of us have any real knowledge of playing the keyboard and we want to learn the organ riff played with the song. We've experimented with what we can figure out but it doesnt quite sound right.

I'm sure it would be incredibly simple for anyone who plays and i was wondering if someone could help us with the organ part. If you cant find the song i can email it to you.

Thanks

Animals or Moods

Hi there:
I'm in the process of compiling several collections of pieces for teaching at the high school level that are thematic and welcome suggestions, preferably ones that are not too obscure (ie. either pieces or at the very least, composers, who are more 'well-known' by the masses) and that might pique a student's interest, for whatever reason. I'm looking at three themes currently, which I hope will clarify:

1) Animals - suggest pieces that evoke an animal (e.g. birds and dogs in Vivaldi's Four Seasons; Saint-Saens Carnival of the Animals; Flight of the Bumblebee, etc..)

2) Mood - suggest pieces that evoke a mood (e.g. Holst Mars; Barber Adagio for Strings, Fucik Entry of the Gladiators, etc.) - this is quite subjective, I know, and that's fine (actually, part of the point!)

3) Nationality - suggest pieces that quite tangibly evoke the sound/flavour of a nation (e.g. Slavonic Dances,..) - e.g. what would be a great example of 'French' music with accordion?; what's the classic piece that sounds Greek..? - how's that for vague.. :-)

BTW - I'd be happy to get suggestions for any of the above that are non-classical as well!!

Thanks for your help!
Martin

Listening Examples for school

Hi there:
I'm in the process of compiling several collections of pieces/songs for the purpose of teaching/exemplifying a variety of musical concepts, and am looking for more suggestions that would provide for a good variety of tunes that would be of interest to high school students. In general, I'd prefer music that isn't so obscure (if it's something they may have encountered, whether on their ipods, radios (!), movie theatres, tv screens, dance floors, etc... that would be great!). Two concepts I'm collecting at the moment are:

Harmony (as in major, minor, or 'neither')
- looking for examples of pieces in minor that don't necessarily 'sound' minor..
- looking for 'common' works with strikingly dissonant moments
Texture (monophonic vs homophonic vs polyphonic)
- looking for 'well-known' pieces that have monophony or polyphony

I'll start with this for now, and post other concepts separately.
Thanks for your help!
Martin

U2 did some recording in Sun Studios in Memphis, for "Rattle and Hum" iirc.

It's a nice room.

Hi, I'm a piano player and know a bit about classical music theory, but actually am a big fan of blues, blues rock and rock and roll. One of the major instruments in those generes is the harmonica, and I've been wanting to learn how to play it for a really long time, but never found a good method I could use for no payment. I've seen some of Erik's Harmonicanotes's 'Harmonica in 30 Days', but he doean't play good which made me stop, some of Gussow's videos, which seemed too high level, and some of JP Allen's free videos, which made me mostly think i should buy the rest of his videos.
Before I go buying off JP's videos, I'd like to know if there are any better video lessons, either payed or free, that could trach me how to play really nice (I'd like to get to Steven Tyler's level), or if there is any method to learn harmonica by myself in an efficient way (and if that method could work for more instruments - better, because eventually I'd like to learn guitar, bass guitar, ukulele, drums, etc.).
Thank you for the reading and for the help!
