Sweeping low pass effect?
 

I need an effect that slowly opens and closes a low pass filter. An eq slope with a nice, resonant hump would be great.

The idea of carrying my computer around to gigs ain't doin' much for me.

Something like this. The automation in this PT session represents the high frequency roll off.

It's a pretty basic effect you hear in dance music. Just wondering.

Look for an effect pedal that uses an LFO to automatically control your LP filter and allows you to set the frequency of the oscillations. Obviously, a manual resonance control will also come in handy if you want your sweeps to be defined.

What this basically is, is a wah pedal... except you're not manually controlling it. I know you're thinking 'auto-wah', but auto-wah uses additional parameters like threshold and other things. If you can get an auto-wah pedal that actually lets you change all its parameters extensively, you'll have what you're looking for.

Unless I'm mistaken, the wah effect utilizes a band-pass filter (which will roll off the low end, too!). Not what I'm looking for, but you're right about the LFO and resonance settings.

Maybe guitar pedals aren't the way to go?

There are most certainly wah pedals sweeping with low pass. There are also wahs that let you select between LP and BP.

Anyway, forget wah pedals.

Synth tools will probably be more interesting than guitar pedals in most cases.

I should get a nice filter bank. Shiz'll be legit.

They have this store called Big City Music near where I live in L. A. They carry all the Sherman filter bank stuff. They don't have the Electrix, but suggested the Vermona Action Filter II plus.

Like I expected, guitar pedals aren't going to cut it.

I want to get something versatile and not some dedicated FX device that'll only be useful for one tune...y'know.

Another option is to get a decent PC laptop and run my FX through that.

I wasn't quite sure whether you were planning on using the effect on guitars or not, as you didn't mention it in your original post.
What's your setup, btw?
And what kind of music?

As for the laptop, you have a tradeoff between the price of a good computer and audio card that will handle the load and latency, while having the affordability (or free-ness, lol) and variety of software effects... versus the superior performance, reliability, ruggedness and mobility of FX units.

I guess it really depends on your application of it. Either way, it's definitely worth thinking through and I hope everything works out for you.
