Hey guys! I thought musicbanter has a lot of musical people who probably have some instruments lying around. I'm not an avid collector of instruments myself, but I sometimes get them when the opportunity is there. When I have kids, I'd like to have a bunch of instruments so that my children can find one or two or three or four etc that they'd like to learn. Maybe you've also got some interesting stuff lying around?

So, let's show off our instruments!

(Some guitars - two cheap, one decent - flute, 4 recorders, 1 kazoo and .. ehr, some kind of brass instrument)

Tore, the brass horn that you have is either a Euphonium (pic) or a Baritone (pic). Yes they are two different instruments, but are both part of the Tuba family.

This is my C flute, fairly close up. I take extra special care of this one because it's extremely expensive and I use it for school. It's an intermediate student flute, meaning that the holes can be plugged with silicone plugs. You can see that a couple of the holes on this flute are unplugged (there's 5 holes). This flute also has a B-foot key, meaning the lowest note in it's range is B (cheaper flutes don't have this feature).

The only electric guitar that I own outright. An Epiphone SG Special (basically a copy of the Gibson version) - a pretty basic model that I got as a gift from my parents. I use this guitar for school, playing in the jazz band and also for the musical theatre pit band.

This is the first guitar that I got, about 6 or 7 years ago. A basic Yamaha F-series acoustic guitar. It's still in good condition and I play it all the time. I love this instrument.

The only bass guitar that I own. A Peavy Millenium BXP bass. I've been playing bass for about 5 years now, and have been mainly for my own enjoyment. But I've gotten pretty good at it!

I don't think it's either because it doesn't have any buttons, but suggestions are more than welcome :)

I'm always happy to share pics of my instruments! I forgot to add that I also own an alto flute and a bass flute, both of which are significantly bigger than the C flute, obviously! I really want a piccolo (they're not terribly expensive), and I would LOVE to own a contra-bass flute but sadly the price tag on a good quality one can range from $3,000 to $18,000 - $21,000! I can buy a brand new car for that price! I actually saw one contra-bass flute in a store here (a very ritzy music shop) priced at $50,000. But it was an absolutely beautiful instrument!

About the horn: I was just taking a wild guess based on what I know about brass instruments :)

The closest one is a Hohner Special 20 Marine Band in C, Middle is a Hohner Pro Harp in C, and the furthest is a Lee Oskar in G. The Lee Oskar is easily my favorite harp, it just sounds so damn smooth.

I had a chance to talk to the flutist for the David Grisman Quintet (can't remember his name for the life of me) who also plays the bass flute, quite amazingly, and learned that it requires a great degree of diaphragm control to play correctly. I can't imagine what a challenge a contra-bass flute must be to play.

All flutes require a lot of diaphragm control and lung capacity, especially the bass flutes. There are many exercises that can be practiced to improve lung function for flute players, and also to strengthen the muscles around the mouth. Good embouchure control is essential in order to get a clean tone. The mouthpiece on bass and contra-bass flutes are larger so it takes some practice. After having played the bass flute for a year in a flute ensemble, I noticed that I can take bigger breaths and not take so many catch breaths in the middle of phrases, on a regular flute. It helps that I do not smoke either.

My Squier Strat is missing from the picture (I think it's in my Uncle's garage up in Canada, along with my Fender G-Dec amp), but that's my current set up. Quite liberal from what it was about 5 years ago when it seemed like I was trying to collect every BOSS pedal known to man.

I love my Big Muff. Such a big sound...I love it. With my setup, it might seem I am obsessed with different styles of distortion and overdrive. I use my amp overdrive, a boss distortion pedal, a boss blues driver, a big muff, and a boss metal. Yeah, I like variety, I guess. Other than that I just have a wah and a delay (and a few crappy amp fx).
