Anyone play any rare instruments?

OK, long shot I know, but it's worth a try!

Anyway, just wondering if anyone here plays any 'less common' instruments. I myself don't, but want to learn the treble viol (or viola da gamba as it's sometimes called). I can also play a little shamisen (it's rare outside Japan!).

Anyone else?

I play a mean kazoo, bruh :afro:

No, but seriously, I can play sitar pretty well :D

I'd love to own a Koto or a Sitar one day. Neither are particularly rare, just uncommon in NA.
Have you heard of Harry Partch? He made his own instruments for his compositions.

Yeah, he's an impressive fella :D A friend of mine over at TheOpenJam.net builds his own effect pedals for sale, and they do some weird and wacky stuff to your sound :D

Thanks dude :D

My neighbor in my old apartment complex was Indian Buddhist and her husband played sitar :afro: He knew I was kinda down, just feelin' like **** all the time, so he helped with some incense and stuff, meditation rituals, and to help focus and relieve stress, he taught me to play the sitar :D

I keep my SG in Open A (lo-hi, E-A-E-A-C#-E) tuning, as it gives natural style of playing very similar to that kinda music. My next guitar will probably be in DADGAD, as it works really well for Indian folk music :D

My acoustic is tuned in Open G (lo-hi, D-G-D-G-B-D) for Delta blues and slide-work :D

I'm all sorts of weird, dude  I draw from Buddhism, New Orleans/Haitian voodoo, all sorts of **** :D

BananaPhish 01-13-2011 08:54 PM

Man that is cool, something I have never got into was messing around with my guitar tuned in differently than standard. Though one of my life goals is to learn some mean slide guitar, which I think draws a bit on that, though I could just be completely ignorant.

I never even thought about Open A until I heard "In My Time Of Dying," and I decided to try it out. I really liked it, and while I was just noodling around, I realized it had this very natural tone that sounded like it was pulled right from the streets of Cairo  It's also good for electric slide.

Of course, "Kashmir" turned me on to DADGAD, but I've since come to use it for a lot of other things :D

Open G just came about from my fanboy-ism for Robert Johnson :D

I'd like to own my own sitar at some point, and maybe even a lap steel :D

i'm going to see this guy in april, and he has this hybrid instrument composed of an acoustic guitar and some attributes of the sitar. he makes really cool music and you guys should check him out!!!

EDIT: of yeah, (eff) his name is HARRY MANX.

FaSho 01-13-2011 09:17 PM

I'm a damn good viola player.

I've played the theremin for a couple years. Got a nice moog one at the moment.

:bowdown::bowdown::love::love:

Viola> violin.

Seriously, with my big hands, I prefer the wider finger spacing. Plus it doesn't sound like a cat being murdered.

Egon 02-10-2011 01:35 AM

I've always wanted a left handed keytar. Go on, try to find one, I dare you.:(

ThePhanastasio 02-10-2011 01:49 AM

My next investment (for an instrument) may be a theremin.

I could also probably pick up a dulcimer or two next time I head to the flea market for fairly cheap - but those really aren't that weird of an instrument. Pretty much everyone I know has a dulcimer.

Ska Lagos Jew Sun Ra 02-10-2011 02:26 AM

I always wanted to play: Hurdy Gurdy, Harpsicord(real, not electronic), and Church Organ(same).

Obviously, none of the 3 are feasible.

Geetarguy 02-11-2011 10:44 AM

I made a frankenstein guitar with an old fender squire. i basically attachted sitar strings on the top of it, while leaving the guitar there as well. It is alot of fun and looks like the devil crapped it out.

Ska Lagos Jew Sun Ra 02-11-2011 04:42 PM

Anybody ever try preparing an instrument?

[Royal Tenenbaum] 02-13-2011 06:03 PM

I actually just bought a Moroccan Oud off Craigslist after a buddy of mine from Egypt offered to teach me how to play :D

DoctorSoft 02-14-2011 12:03 AM

I play the saw, but I'm ****ing terrible.

infantrysgirl18 02-24-2011 07:28 PM

I made myself a canjo. Dont know if they are rare but no I know has one. Its a fun little instrument to play. Very simple and easy. But its great because I built it start to finish. Makes it that much cooler.

makes me think of a cross between rabab (because of the 1 string), dulcimer (because of the frets), and cigar-box guitar (because of the can)

i can play the autoharp (aka chromaharp) but i'm not sure how "rare" it is, i also have a "pitched" vacuum tube i created for musical effects (if you send me a pm i'll tell you how to do this properly), i play the vibraslap they're not very rare but hard to find in real life, agogo bell.

i'm thinking about making some harps but i'd need to buy some tuning heads, some wood, and a finish plus i need to decide what kind of strings i'd want for it how many etc... truthfully when you think about designing a custom harp is actually quite easy unlike a guitar or other instrument.

i'm really wanting an Erhu (whiny chinese fiddle), Suling (easy to play indonesian flute 14"), an accordion with keys not buttons, a portable organ (say one cheap on ebay but i lost the auction)., and hundreds of other instruments.

Where'd you get the vibraslap from? I'm trying to find one.

one of my frens had one of these (veena/venu - something like a sitar but it's a Carnatic, not a Hindustani classical instrument) - I used to play it a lot but wasn't very good at it - i did a pretty good version of The Smiths' Heaven Knows I'm Miserable Now on it in a school concert when I was 15, but only one or two in the audience was actually mesmerised by my playing and singing
