Where to start in buying a ukulele?

I'm hoping to buy my boyfriend a ukulele for his birthday. I don't know instruments, though, and I have no idea how to even start considering what kind, what size, what material, etc. If I'm hoping to spend around $100-$150, what should I look for in a decent quality uke?
Thanks!

You don't have to spend that much to get a decent uke. Ive been playing this one for a year and have no intent on buying another. I assume he wants the typical small form factor.

Just be sure to get something other than those dirt cheap ones. Something with decent 'nylagut' strings will be preferable as it is the closest you can get to the original uke sound of real gut strings.

If he plays guitar already, he'll use the same chord fingering patterns. The chords will be a different key, but he'll already know the fingering.
