The Age of Double Bass is Here

Not since the time of the first Viennese School has the double bass enjoyed such a profound period of growth. During that part of the late 18th century, every great composer wrote solos and concertos for the bass, including Haydn, Mozart, Dittersdorf and Hoffmeister, as well as many lesser-known composers. An unprecedented amount of chamber music including the double bass also appeared.

This heyday of bass popularity soon came to an end – and from 1824 to 1949 no major composer wrote a solo work for the double bass. Not until Hindemith wrote his Double Bass Sonata in 1949 did composers begin to turn their attention back to the instrument. With the advent of Gary Karr’s international career and the popularity of European bassists Ludwig Streicher and Franco Petracchi, this interest began to snowball.

But a movement cannot gain momentum with just a few people.<snip>

Herman Reinshagen's bass is for sale! Reinshagen was a top bassist in the NY Philharmonic. He taught such notables as Gary Karr and Charles Mingus. He also taught Fred Zimmerman who is considered the foremost bass pedagogue in North America and Japan (although he never taught in Japan, but the Japanese bassists all learn from Zimmerman's books and techniques). Mr. Zimmerman taught Robert Gladstone who led the Detroit Symphony Orchestra for 34 years. Considered by Gunther Schuller and Leonard Bernstein as one of the greatest bassists of his time (he died in '94). Mr. Gladstone taught my instructor. So the Reinshagen bass is of special interest to me.

Concerning the bass in The Strad article above being played in this clip. An online acquaintance, also a bassist, did some checking through his many contacts and found out the bass shown is for sale in New York and it's only $125,000!
