One of the recent cool but kinda weird instrument I've seen was the 3d printed violin.

These guitars were custom made for The Strawberry Alarm Clock in the 60's...

Those are pretty cool, but everything I've seen performed on them was awful. As a guy who likes instruments that sound like ****, that one really sounds like ****.

The Guqin is nifty, imagine a Guzheng/Koto mixed with a slide guitar. I would post a video of someone playing one, but I don't have enough posts yet.

Self perpetuating garbage can instrument I made today using a passive magnetic guitar pickup and a honey tone mini amp.

I bet Frown has a whole drawer of them.

Andy Graham designed the SlapStick I guess the design is somewhat similar in concept to a one string washtub bass. However instead of a string he uses a metal ribbon. He created two other instruments, one was a slapstick connected to a didgeridoo, the other is an instrument resembling a four string harp connection to a didgeridoo.

I've known about those forever and have seen several demos and performances, but can anyone explain to me how they work? Is it a rotating gear hitting a fat string in the box?

Tristan_Geoff 12-01-2016 10:45 AM

I read something about a drum and a string moving across it?

grindy 12-03-2016 12:43 AM

Those guys use a whole bunch of homemade, toy and just unusual instruments.
Great stuff.

Neapolitan 01-12-2017 10:03 PM

It's not an unusual instrument, just an unconventional way to play bass. ftr He uses pitch shift to vary the buzz.

I'd play it with some sticks and/or a violin bow. I've seen several things like this, but the construction element of the video makes it especially cooler.

Growing up, my neighbour was like the Indian version of Ned Flanders/Indian music teacher... I was 14 in his house recording me playing the sitar/his baby...
He has a lot of different Indian instruments, from drums to stringed and like wood box accordion thing... His sitar was like his baby/he didn't lend me that, let me play on it though as I jammed with my guitar back then... Holding a sitar is... Tricky, and involves yoga and your foot and there's a book he showed me real quick on how to hold it, and I remember playing it was great, and I remember my arm got tired since it was above my head with that thing and the sitar picks are like metal wires on your finger and your fret next to the raised fret, that was cool, sounded awesome! - He lent me a wooden cross between a guitar and piano you strummed with metal keys, and that had another plastic pick that was bigger and longer than a guitar pick, I don't know what that was called, but that was alright as far as instruments went... (I was the kid with a bulbul tarang in his bedroom thanks to his neighbour). :) 'I just Googled it and found out what it was called.'

The craziest thing my school had, and we had a couple of these, were steel drums.

Frownland 02-07-2018 10:46 PM

I'm pretty sure that this is innovative as ****. Does anyone know of any similar tech? Could be a new wave that allows artists to incorporate dance into their music in interesting ways.

Frownland 02-07-2018 11:10 PM

Invest invest invest. When the tech is finalized to the point of working with design, this will blow the absolute **** up. Especially if they could make it so that the voice control element could handle spitting and be hands free. DAMN. The jams start at 11:35.

Protip: Financial advice from drunk fools probably sucks.
