How would you interact with digital audio plugins?

Im doing a research-paper on how to interact with digital audio plugins while playing an instrument. And I would like to discuss your experience in audio software programs and how you use there plugins while playing and recording songs. What would be the best way to interact with those plugins? Instead of using mouse and keyboard that I for instance usually navigate with when Im setting new audio effects and such! I play guitar a lot and in my world it would be so much easier to use an external device that is more suitable for my way of interacting with my guitar. Just an example could be a digital pedal-board that I could apply different variations of sounds effect by pressing my foot on digital buttons. But it's me how would you describe a better way to communicate with audio plugins that you love to use in your software program? If you have the time please answer my quick questionnaire for user input

I usually use an external midi controller which provides multiples controllers of different types (on/off buttons, velocity buttons, sliders, infinite/finite rotary potentiometers...). I then have to decide what controller to assign to what parameter exposed by a virtual instrument or effect.

Beside that, I know a research artist working at SCRIME (Studio de Création et de Recherche en Informatique et Musiques Expérimentales), Joseph Larralde, who uses an exoskeleton with embedded sensors to trigger sounds generated by custom Max/MSP programs.
