Hip Hop Poll: Round 2, Poll F

Black Star, I don't like Aesop Rock. He never really caught on with me. I don't like his voice/cadence

Kirby 02-14-2011 04:30 AM

This one's hard for me.

Right now I'm trying to pick between Aesop Rock and Black Star.

Janszoon 02-14-2011 07:56 AM

Aesop for me. Man all the choices in this group have been easy!

Chef.

James 02-14-2011 09:07 AM

Chef. Love him. I like what I've heard from Aesop Rock so far, didn't love it. Honestly a lot of Rae's stuff isn't that great to me, but his stuff that is good is just over the top awesome.

I'll own up to voting Black Star. While I recognize Aesop Rock is the most intricate lyricist of the bunch, voice and production are real road blocks for me fully enjoying listening to him. I think the combination of Mos Def and Talib Kweli makes for a better overall product than any of Aesop's albums as a whole.

pourmeanother 02-14-2011 03:05 PM

Moot point as Aesop is rolling... which is fine, as he is pretty deserving.

I feel the exact opposite. I find Aesop's voice soothing, comforting, love the cadence everyone seems to dislike. /shrug

Mos Def, on the other hand, I dunno if he has a lisp or wha... but he's write up there on the list of difficult artists to listen to. DoseOne has to have it worst though.

And I love the production on Aesop's works. Blockhead is amazing, DJ Big Wiz is all right.

By the way I was listening to John Zorn's tribute to Ennio Morricone, The Big Gundown, and I heard at least 2 tracks that were sampled for Aesop songs. Poverty, and Giu, La Testa!. I listened to the original Morricone versions also but its clear they were sampling Zorn. Very cool I thought. Pleasant surprise as well.

I agree with you on that one with Doseone, I'm finding it so hard to get into him because of his voice. I'm probably just going to print out all of his lyrics and rap them, record it and listen to what I rap lol.

Best of luck, he's pretty fast. I'd do the same, but don't think I could keep up. Sounds fun :tramp:

I will third the thing with DoseOne, I think it's restricting my enjoyment of Themselves.

It's something all right.

That being said, when running into these roadblocks with Aesops and DoseOnes, the more you listen the more you understand next time. I used to have trouble understanding Aesop, now I understand every word, even on new releases. I have to listen to more Dose and really get him down.

yeah but I don't have to do it at his pace. Since I have the lyrics I can do it at whatever pace I feel like maybe I won't get the same Doseone feel since i'm not rapping as fast but I just want to hear the lyrics without listening to his garbled voice.

I used to not like his voice as well but I think listening to 13 & God is what turned me around on the issue. Now I actually like his voice quite a bit!

This song might be a good way to ease into DoseOne's voice for people who don't generally like it. It definitely worked for me (my favorite part starts around 2:30):

James 02-15-2011 04:08 PM

I like 13 & God a bit more because I am not just getting his voice the whole time and it's mixing it up a bit. Like I am getting it in smaller doses.

Haha yeah. I was aware I was making a small pun with that comparison.
