Dimebag could sometimes be heard playing rough as guts. Definitely doesn't win the technical proficiency title.

Thanks, I'll check those SRV songs out.

Dimebag was awesome, some amazing riffs and solos, though to label him the best, is perhaps a bit far.

I think overall Page or Gilmour are my favourites, Page is technically superior, but Gilmours solos are some of the best ever, in my opinion.

Glad to see Morello get a mention, from someone other than myself. He is truly awesome One of my favourites, just because he's so different.

the problem with jazz guitar, if we look at jazz on the whole is its mostly a rhytham instrument. There are guitartists who lead, but not many, and pople don't know jazz much to begin with.

I have a few jazz CD's but if any of them have guitar on the track, I wouldnt know it. To be honest, improv guitar is a metal thing...for the most part.

Are you joking?, improv is a metal thing?, dude, jazz in the most part is based on improvising, most metal players cant improvise that well, especialy compared to the jazz greats, theres little compromise at all in jazz guitar. You want to hear some great jazz players then you can start with Django Reinhardt and Joe Pass, and believe me, they can play lead just as well as they play rhythm, in fact, they often do both at the same time. Also check out John Mclaughlin of The Mahavishnu Orchestra, hes like the jazz equalvent of shreding, his edgy style would definitely appeal to you, check him out.
