Me personally, if people want to nail a shark to the wall and call it art, fine. I still prefer art that is aesthetically pleasing in some shape or form.

I think this statement is often a cop-out used by people that don't have enough patience or interest to really listen to avant-garde material properly. Nobody is going to say that Rush sucks or that Chris Squire was a terrible bassist, but sometimes a comic artist/drummer with a ridiculous amount of pent up rage and a bassist that thinks a cello is the only instrument with proper tuning can create music that has honest legitimacy and delivers a more heartfelt emotional response. It just takes a few more listens than normal to see past the earsplitting feedback oscillation and distorted cartoon lyrics.

Your statement also implies that there is some fundamental understanding of what is aesthetically pleasing, which there isn't, and is inherently fallacious. I like Picasso's blue period, but Monet's work bores me and actually turns me away. Judging whether something is art is the work of elitist douchebags who hold no legitimate credentials, and taste is solely the purview of the common mood.

EDIT: P.S. For the record, the first thing my dad said when I played him Lockstockings and Crown of Storms was that it sounded like prog. Which it definitely sounds influenced by, whether it is or not. So if any avant-garde dadaists give you flak you can tell them that Brian Gibson probably likes it. And also for the record I don't listen to much avant-garde so I'm overusing Lightning Bolt as an example.

As a prog fan I know the value of repeated listens.

I downloaded a Glenn Branca album, I've listened to it 2 or 3 times. It's something I can appreciate but it's just not something I seriously enjoy listening to.

I'm not knocking avant garde music itself so much as the pretentious art culture surrounding it, and that is clearly just my subjective opinion. I dig John Zorn and Fred Frith, at least.

C'mon, now you're just analizing me to death, that was clearly a subjective statement, when I said I don't find it aesthetically pleasing, I mean I don't find it aesthetically pleasing, if others do that's fine, I never said it wasn't art, I just personally think conceptual art is horrible.

I guess I should join the Stuckist movement or something.

I think avant garde purists look at progressive rock in a way similar to how post-modernists view acadamic art.

That is, not very favorably.

Hahaha! That's pretty good, dude. She does have quite the musical taste. We've shared a lot of music, her and I. She introduced me to most of the hip hop and classical music that I like, and I introduced her to 4 out of 5 of those bands you just listed.

333: She's a music nut. Her tastes are just as varied and expansive as my own. Most of what she likes, I enjoy too. Except for Modest Mouse and Death Cab For Cutie. It's not gonna happen!

2dogsrunning: I can comment on his musical tastes because we grew up together, sharing all the music we came into contact with as we went along. Naturally, there's some stuff that I like that he doesn't and vice versa, but the common threads we share run deep.

Pobody's_Nerfect: This guy seems to have a pretty right on sense of music taste. From what little I've gathered on his tastes, he's really into a lot of obscure talent, which I can really dig.

Antonio: Everything I've heard from this guy makes me wonder why he's in a pop punk band. No offense.

Hesher: Yes, he's new, but I have a feeling he'll be sticking around. From the thirteen or so bands he listed on his introduction, I get the notion that this guy has very eclectic tastes, built mainly around a foundation of metal and hardcore, much like myself.

Flower Child: Her reviews of "Highway Song" and "Don't Follow" got me interested in some of the other things she was touting. She's definitely got some strong roots in the Classic Rock department. Kind of reminds me of my sister's musical tastes, only a little more country-fied.

Fellow bass players

crash_override: This guy seems to know a lot about some old-school ****. And just as much about the new school. Everything I've heard him say about music I usually agree with, at least minimally.

DMBassDude: He's seem to got a good head on his shoulders for a teenager, if at least musically. Introduced me to Scale The Summit. I was impressed.

Mr. Dave: The music he knows... he knows. Pretty knowledgeable about good gear, too. And I've heard him lay down some pretty wise statements. Not bad for a guy who shares my name.

I should have figured you for a bassist, from my experience bass players always attracts the most eccentric personalities.
