Yeah I think Kozelek's way of storytelling is very interesting and the quiet instrumentation totally compliments that. The War On Drugs on the other hand sound way too uninspired from what I've heard of them, Lost In The Dream was one of my least fav albums of laSt year.

Kozalek puts this kinda spell on me no other singer/songwriter can do. He actually makes me wanna hear his lyrics. Not to say other singers can't but it's hard not to pay close attention.

Edit: I like The War On Drugs too tho.

Track 1(Love) Like the jangly guitar; sort of reminds me of the opening to “Mrs Robinson”. His voice is good, reminds me of someone but I can't think who. Piano's really nice.
Track 2(Love) Like this one too; all guitar but really nice, has a kind of swingalong rhythm to it. It's driving me mad though who he reminds me of.
Track 3(Love) Lovely guitar intro
Track 4(Love) Another nice intro, bit more uptempo this time. Nice song.
Track 5(Love) Really nice instrumental
Track 6(Love) I love the melody and the atmosphere in this one. Ah! Cracked it! It's John Martyn he sounds like! Thank Christ for that: it was driving me up the wall!
Track 7(Love) Short but very breezy and upbeat
Track 8(Love) By contrast, this has an almost painful melancholy about it.
Track 9(Love) This seems to be quite bitter lyrically, though it's a kind of upbeat tune
Track 10(Love) A short song that seems like it might predict his eventual suicide?
Track 11(Love) Folky, uptempo and simple little closer.

End result: Having read about his tragic and short life, this seems to have been a man who could have been a great influence on music had he not suffered from depression and taken his own life. A terrible loss, and a really good album.

So, Love or Hate? This would be a Love.

His penultimate album, Bryter Layter, is also fantastic and features a lot of nice baroque instrumentation and some more varied songwriting. Might be another really good rec for this thread from somebody down the line
