I recommend doing a bit of Ian Curtis research on his life before hearing Closer.
It's a very personal album and knowing a bit about what was gong on in his head helps.

Sometimes it is good to hear something without any pre concieved emotional views I.E the music should stand up on it's own two feet. This is not a criticism of artist or album (whom I love both ).

I did that with elliott smith, then after falling in love my heart was broken when I find out he was already dead.
