If we could just talk for a moment about how bad English voice actors actually are...

Seriously, watch the subtitled versions. Japanese voice actors are real actors. They train for years and years before ever breaking into the industry, and the difference in skill is clear in literally any comparison you can make. Many times they are better actors than half the famous names in Hollywood. In contrast, some English voice actors got their job by knowing a guy who knows a guy--literally without any acting experience at all. It shows. I find English voice actors unbearable.

Japanese acting can be slightly unbearable simply because I think Japanese culture in general necessitates Japanese acting to be more unemotional than Western acting, but in general yeah, when it's time to actually bring the emotion the Japanese voice actors carry that vastly better.

The American voice actors from what I've heard are generally just a small pool of absolute ****ing hacks who just happen to live within a small area of where ever the voice actor studios happen to be, which for some reason happens to be in Texas. But sometimes the American dubs can just so happen to be better, but that's more happenstance for the specific dub than any virtue of American voice actors.

It really helps in Hellsing that so many of the characters are British and German, so the accents are kind of a deal breaker, but even the voice actor for Alucard just so happens to nail his part at times in a way that outclasses the far more consistent talent of his Japanese counterpart. The American guy is awful in general (god I ****ing hate him in so many things), but kind of found his niche with the character in just that one show so it worked.

I know none of you are Attack on Titan fans, but let me tell you, when those actors scream bloody murder, they really sell the idea that they're getting eaten alive.

Screaming is one thing that American actors rarely get right. Not just voice actors, but across the board.

Yeah no Americans wouldn't know terror if it came up and scared the **** out of them. They just can't reach the threshold of true pain. The Japanese got that ****. They can make horror feel uncomfortable. Evangelion is one of the best examples. I was looking for that scene where Asuka gets mindraped by an angel, which is just entirely uncomfortable in Japanese as it's a very long scene which makes it clear that it's a rape, but I couldn't quite find the right clip.

Yeah, that was some seriously great acting, I agree. American actors can only ever seem to breach "angry shouting" most of the time. If anybody ever commits to a blood curdling scream, they instantly win my respect as an actor.

Honestly the woman who played Asuka in English did a relatively good job comparative to other English language actors, but I imagine that's simply because the job was to act like she was being raped and there was simply no other thing she could do but to act like she was being raped, so at least she reached a good volume, which is more of a feat than most other people ever try in her line of work. But it still doesn't have the visceral feel of the Japanese voice actress that just puts your haunches up like a cat.

TFW you're like "I should cancel my subscription to Crunchyroll cause I never use it," but then you realize that it's a bitch to find new anime in Japanese/subtitled even in torrent and you're like, you have worth, Crunchyroll. You have worth.
