well i missed that last battle sadly but im back for this one whoo

tbh im not really a huge fan of either of these, but I think i do enjoy Emissaries more. Melechesh is kind of like the Orphaned Land of black metal in that they both incorporate that middle eastern style and it's also got some of that super catchy "pump up" style that probably influenced Kvelertak, whom I really enjoy. Yet Melechesh seems like the kind of music I enjoy thinking about more than listening to (if that even makes sense)

Absu is a band Ive just always had trouble liking. And Tara has always been at the forefront of that. I don't hate listening to it or anything, it's just.. there. Nothing really memorable for me here it just starts and finishes and then I listen to something else. All in one motion it seems. It's just not really the black metal style I go for reguarly.

Tara had an awesome intro. I ****ing love bagpipes. Once the metal stuff kicked in, I was kinda turned off though... lame vocals and honestly all the songs sounded the same to me. The flow of this album was really jilted, too. I did not like how they arranged it at all. Typical thrashy crap with no imagination. She Cries the Quiet Lake and Stone of Destiny had a little variety which was pretty cool. And I did think the 2 minute instrumentals were the ****, this band should really consider making an album more along those lines. Either meld that sort of thing in with the metal more, or straight up pull a folk album out.

I went into this battle already enjoying Melechesh, and they've proven themselves very clear winners here. Not every song was gold, but every metal song did win over every non-instrumental Absu song for me, and The Scribes of Kur as well as Extemporized Opthalmic Release were better than the good Absu stuff anyways. There was creativity here, something aside from that typical dandandandnadnanda that turns so many people off the genre. And they varied up the vocals a bit, whereas Absu didn't stray once. Some songs weren't awesome, especially if you're familiar with their other material, but most of them were a thoroughly enjoyable listen that I'd pass on to anyone.

As I said, very clear winners, no contest. But I may look into whoever is most down with the atmospheric non-metal instrumentals of Absu because those were pretty ****ing fantastic and I'm sure at least one member has a side project embracing the true talent. Google awaits!

I'm starting to think I should've pitted Absu's self titled album vs Emissaries, since that's probably Absu's most accessible album, also the one with the most variety from them. The main reason I decided not to use Absu's self titled, and Tara instead in the battle was because "Absu" has the lowest rating of any of Absu's full length albums and "Tara" has the highest rating on the website Metal Archives, though I usually find the Metal Archives crowd tends to have somewhat of a different taste to many other online Metal communities. Usually they prefer the bands' more "true" material, but I think Absu's self titled is just about as good as any of their other albums, so I regret not choosing it instead, because I think it might have been more of a contest that way here if I had chosen it to go against Emissaries.

That's cause they're elitist douchebags. I love that site, but the people on it can kiss my ass. They don't even have an entry for Korn. I could give a **** about Korn, but they're still one of the biggest metal bands of all time. Not having an entry for them is retarded.

Yeah, while I don't usually care much myself for the bands they leave off of the website, I find it wrong to exclude such large and prominent Metal bands from a website which is supposed to be a dedicated encyclopedia for the genre. It just makes the website feel incomplete.

To me Absu are just more consistent to me on Tara than Melechesh are on Emissaries. I mean I still love songs like Deluge of Delusional Dreams, and Ladders to Sumeria, but more of the songs feel like filler on Melechesh's album to me, especially later into the album. Whereas I love more than twice as many songs on Tara than Emissaries. I actually discovered Melechesh first, and Emissaries is my favourite album from them, but ever since discovering Absu most of Melechesh's work just doesn't sound as special to me anymore.

I still haven't listened to the Melechesh album, but I'm not really sure I want to. I didn't really like the Absu album and I'm not really feeling this stuff right now. Based on replies here though, I think I might like the other one.
