I've heard of I Was Afraid. They're quite good. I think if they had more recognition, they could help bring "grungegaze" into a bigger spotlight in the indie community.

But the genre, including the lyrics, had a lot of the same emotional, deep/dark/angsty context. The genre was partially built on angst. Plus, keep in mind Soundgarden and AiC are also alternative...
