The downside of that is most British serials & series only have 6 episodes a year.
Only an exclusive few that they know will sell abroad will get 12/13 episodes and that list is very small. Off the top of my head the only two I can think of that do are Doctor Who & Shameless.
Most American serials get at least over 20 episodes a series, so even if they are cancelled they still have more time to get over than most British serials.
