Try
The Encyclopedia Metallum. It's sort of elitist. You won't find any scene bands on there. But if you're looking for good old thrash, death, black, doom, etc or anything "underground", it's great. It's generally got more than one review per album so you get a good idea of how good an album is without having to worry about if it was just some random weirdo who actually thought the new Morbid Angel didn't suck.
