Sludge Metal albums - Dopesick, Take As Needed For Pain, Sore, ...At A Loss, Nola, When The Kite Strings Pop, Paegan Terrorism Tactics.
And here I thought everyone on MB hated Down. Good pick

I think NOLA is the only thing I can stand that Phil Anselmo had any part in.

I have a decent collection of metal, but if I had to go to the shelf and have the choice of only keeping one... I'm going with Fate's Warning "Awaken the Guardian." Arch's last album with the band, and absolutely flawless all the way through. My second choice would be Opeth's "Ghost Reveries."

PS-- The new 2011 collaboration of Arch/ Matheos "Sympathetic Resonance" is excellent as well. Working my way through that one right now.

Down is probably the only thing with Phil Anselmo that I`m not crazy on, I mean Down are just a sludge supergroup and inferior to most of each individuals other careers. Now when it comes to Phil Anselmo post Pantera its got to be Superjoint Ritual now they`re fucking A.

I love that album too, I mean the whole thing is Peter Steele running down and lyrically abusing his ex-girlfriend

And here I thought Down were actually popular. I bought Over the Under because some metal mag had a review that made it seem like the best thing since sliced bread. It was just totally mediocre. It had it's moments, but there was just nothing to make me care. It wasn't heavy enough to make me bang my head and the riffs were second rate at best.

This is what pisses me off about metal mags. They're always pushing something for some reason other than because it's good. It's funny cause the reviews are usually (USUALLY) more honest than the features. So you'll get some article talking about how great and misunderstood deathcore is, then on the next page the reviews are just slamming it.

To be fair I never take much notice of what mags say about an individual album, I usually check on wiki as you usually get a general idea based on opinions from different sources. To be honest most of the best recommendations I`ve had for metal have actually come from this site.

Try The Encyclopedia Metallum. It's sort of elitist. You won't find any scene bands on there. But if you're looking for good old thrash, death, black, doom, etc or anything "underground", it's great. It's generally got more than one review per album so you get a good idea of how good an album is without having to worry about if it was just some random weirdo who actually thought the new Morbid Angel didn't suck.
