tl;dr- I like TF2 cause it's an FPS for people who value teamwork over who can shoot a gun better, plus the large amount of variety with 9 classes.

sorry for the long-winded answer. as you may have noticed I'm REALLY into this game.
Agreed on most of what you posted. The general online perspective on the game is that it's the Mario Kart of online multiplayer FPS games. If you want something more 'serious' or 'legitimate' you don't want TF2. I'd say it's one of those games that IS super easy to pick up, but it offers a lot of strategic and tactical depth once you really start getting into it, if you're so inclined.

With legitimately unique classes available anyone should be able to find a role that suits their play style. The real distinction between a good shooter player and a good TF2 player is the ability to adapt to what your team needs as opposed to excelling with a particular class in a specific role.

You're absolutely right on the teamwork aspect though, 3-4 people working in tandem on a side is enough to steamroll a full dozen individuals on the other. I notice a lot of noob Engis though, really hung up on getting kills for their sentries - not building dispensers - then whining about not getting enough spychecking (if they built something to replenish my ammo... I probably wouldn't have to run away).

As for the techniques you mention, the loading tips specifically say that the Medic no longer charges uber faster for self-inflicted wounds. Dunno if that's different in tournaments but I've never noticed it on the pubs while I healed over a million points for that one achievement.

And while it's entirely possible for a Pyro to airblast rockets, grenades, or sticky bombs back to the opponent, I think it's safe to say it's more luck than skill when they connect for the majority of players. Myself very much included (even if people sometimes call me a 'pro' pyro).

But best of all... it's entirely free.

Yes, there's an online store available for the game, yes, you can buy fancy weapons and stuff there (it is not pay to win). You can also get most of those same items as random drops from playing the game or craft the necessary materials. The only real downsides to being a free player is that you can't trade items and have a limit on your backpack (like 50 slots or something).
