to be honest it's kind of the opposite. I love TF2 because when you look past the cartoony exterior there's actually a lot of subtleties that people who don't play it can't really pick up at first. There's plenty of people who started cause of the "Meet The Team" videos (including me), but after a while there's alot more to it than just killing people all the time.

for one thing teamwork is valued more than K/D ratio. someone could have the most kills on both sides and still lose the game for the team if they don't play the objective. that and there's the whole rock-paper-scissors format with different classes countering each other as well as subtleties in each class, like

-the ability to charge your shots as a Sniper by staying scoped in, making them more powerful
-the fact that Scouts capture points twice as fast as anyone else and are the fastest class in the game
-how Medics are able to charge up their uber faster by healing damaged players (in tournaments sometimes players will purposely hurt themselves so the Medic builds uber faster)
-the whole idea of rocket/stickybomb jumping in terms of map strategy
-the Heavy's minigun bullets have drop off and is less damaging with more distance
-the Pyro's airblast being able to shoot back projectiles like rockets
-that you actually lose less cloak as a Spy when you're crouching while walking

that's stuff they don't really teach in the beginning or you don't pick until after a while of playing. not to mention when you get different items and they have completely different advantages and disadvantages.

tl;dr- I like TF2 cause it's an FPS for people who value teamwork over who can shoot a gun better, plus the large amount of variety with 9 classes.

sorry for the long-winded answer. as you may have noticed I'm REALLY into this game.

Just picked up Lone Survivor on Steam .. it's a 2D survival horror/adventure game with some very retro-ish graphics.

So far so good I'm about half an hour in and I gotta say the atmosphere and so on is great. It feels a bit like zombie apocalypse meets Lovecraft.

Agreed on most of what you posted. The general online perspective on the game is that it's the Mario Kart of online multiplayer FPS games. If you want something more 'serious' or 'legitimate' you don't want TF2. I'd say it's one of those games that IS super easy to pick up, but it offers a lot of strategic and tactical depth once you really start getting into it, if you're so inclined.

With legitimately unique classes available anyone should be able to find a role that suits their play style. The real distinction between a good shooter player and a good TF2 player is the ability to adapt to what your team needs as opposed to excelling with a particular class in a specific role.

You're absolutely right on the teamwork aspect though, 3-4 people working in tandem on a side is enough to steamroll a full dozen individuals on the other. I notice a lot of noob Engis though, really hung up on getting kills for their sentries - not building dispensers - then whining about not getting enough spychecking (if they built something to replenish my ammo... I probably wouldn't have to run away).

As for the techniques you mention, the loading tips specifically say that the Medic no longer charges uber faster for self-inflicted wounds. Dunno if that's different in tournaments but I've never noticed it on the pubs while I healed over a million points for that one achievement.

And while it's entirely possible for a Pyro to airblast rockets, grenades, or sticky bombs back to the opponent, I think it's safe to say it's more luck than skill when they connect for the majority of players. Myself very much included (even if people sometimes call me a 'pro' pyro).

But best of all... it's entirely free.

Yes, there's an online store available for the game, yes, you can buy fancy weapons and stuff there (it is not pay to win). You can also get most of those same items as random drops from playing the game or craft the necessary materials. The only real downsides to being a free player is that you can't trade items and have a limit on your backpack (like 50 slots or something).

It's a good thing I have midterms next week.

It's okay, I didn't want to pass my classes this quarter anyway.

I'm an idiot. I completely misunderstood your first post and thought you were talking about COD.

TF2 is a fantastic game.
