It wasn't. Just a glimpse into my mind when I hear a gamer say their gaming is a sport. I think likely it comes from some deep jealousy or want for not being an athlete in their youth.
I think your side of the argument likes to exaggerate the physical requirement needed for gaming. Even in the non-contact sports such as golf, the level of physical activity is 10X higher than sitting behind a computer screen.
