I'm not sure this part was necessary to convey your point.
It wasn't. Just a glimpse into my mind when I hear a gamer say their gaming is a sport. I think likely it comes from some deep jealousy or want for not being an athlete in their youth.

I think your side of the argument likes to exaggerate the physical requirement needed for gaming. Even in the non-contact sports such as golf, the level of physical activity is 10X higher than sitting behind a computer screen.

Well I'm a gamer, and I'd argue it's a sport (if done competitively) and can safely say that's not true. Probably not a good idea to paint us all with the same brush.

What about darts, bowling, fishing, or hunting?

Also, the fact that it requires physical movement by definition makes it a physical activity, as opposed to mental.

I've never considered fishing or hunting a sport.

And I didn't say there wasn't physical activity... You'd be hard pressed to name 10 things on this Earth that require zero physical activity. But I believe it's exaggerated by gamers. It's clicking a mouse, thumbing some buttons, and nothing more.

That seems to be the general theme of this thread. "I don't consider this... [insert personal bias]"

From dictionary.com:

sport: an athletic activity requiring skill or physical prowess and often of a competitive nature, as racing, baseball, tennis, golf, bowling, wrestling, boxing, hunting, fishing, etc.

Then why are we having this discussion? What's the point of this thread if we are gonna base everything off of technical definitions? In my opinion, the physical prowess needed for something to be considered a sport falls somewhere beyond sitting in a computer chair.

You're asking the wrong person, but my guess is GB was hoping for some actual linguistic argument that eSports are not sports, since we're talking about the meaning of a particular word.

I don't even know why I'm responding, since your whole argument is "HEY LOOK, NERDS! THEY'RE TOTALLY THE SAME AS THE 80's STEREOTYPE, LOL FAT KIDS", and you must have been living under a rock to think thats really applicable to the nerd group, but here, have a few images of good looking and physically fit progamers:

Meet Nick "Tasteless" Plott, GOMTV GSL Commentator:

Meet Rotterdam, Warcraft 3/Starcraft 2 Progamer -

And meet team Evil Geniuses, Greg "IdrA" Fields, Bryce "Machine" Bates, Geoff "inControl" Robinson, and Anna "unControllable" Prosser (Former Miss Oregon USA, and Fiancee to InControl)

And finally, lets look at MooN and NaDa, way back in the days of Starcraft 1, when 300 APM became an AVERAGE APM. Players in BroodWar now routinely exceed 600APM during intense portions of matches.

I find it laughable this is actually still being debated.

I played GTA for about 8hrs a day when I was young. I'm such a retired athlete.

That's wonderful, hope you had a nice laugh.

Now kindly take your contributions to the Bitch Box or some other equally logic-deprived thread. I don't think you'd appreciate someone spamming your threads with useless sarcastic responses.

No wonder, you seriously expect people not to make sarcastic comments in a thread about wither gaming is a sport. Get a grip mate.

As a sports coach I hardly even consider Darts and Snooker as a sport. Now kindly see some sense.
