Steve Vai - Great guitarist, not the best songwriter. He has a lot of potential, but he just does a lot of weird **** in his music that really takes away from what could really be well-written music (such as deciding out of nowhere to experiment with weird noises in the middle of the song, and the sound samples he uses...UGH.)

i rate them both about the same, i'd wish people would overlook their "tarnished" reputation as technical players for tech's sake and lump them into wankers like Malmsteen when both are quite good songwriters
saying that, though, i hope Satch doesn't ever sing again. EVER.
