The best guitarists, to me, are the one's who capture your attention. If they play blisteringly fast or slow and smooth, as long as they do it right it doesn't matter. There are pieces of songs by guitarists who I wouldn't put in a top ten, if I had to, but who capture the moment perfectly for me.
An example being Jerry Cantrell in 'I Stay Away'. Technically brilliant it may not be, but who am I to judge? What it is, though, is perfectly structured around the song and immensely atmospheric.
