The best guitarists, to me, are the one's who capture your attention. If they play blisteringly fast or slow and smooth, as long as they do it right it doesn't matter. There are pieces of songs by guitarists who I wouldn't put in a top ten, if I had to, but who capture the moment perfectly for me.

An example being Jerry Cantrell in 'I Stay Away'. Technically brilliant it may not be, but who am I to judge? What it is, though, is perfectly structured around the song and immensely atmospheric.

Couldn't agree more, probably the best guitarist who usually doesn't get put onto lists of best guitarists. the live version of big love from Fleetwood Macs comeback tour is some of the most intense acoustic playing in rock history.

Yeah I debated putting Haino on my list. I used to listen to him a lot during my heavy J-Noise phase. His solos are like eruptions of lava. Makoto Kawabata and KK Null are also very good.

But that was just for show. It's not like he had any sort of real control or technique with his mouth, he'd just tap the strings on his teeth to help accentuate the legato sounds his right hand was playing.

All that really gave us was a template for cheeseballs to fling their guitar behind their heads to show off how 'good' they are while normally playing the most generic blues lick you've ever heard.

I'd rather praise Jimi for his creation of a style that effortlessly blended lead and rhythm playing in a way that few can emulate smoothly than any kind of flashy stage gag.

Even hendrix grew tired of the reputation. Few interviews where he states that he wishes that he never played off the gimick becuase people now expect it from him.

Always a big favourite of mine, despite the fact that he ruined both Deep Purple and Rainbow with his domineering approach in firing band members.
