I feel all music and bands are over-rated. Music is just a bunch of sounds, the fluff of civilization, and even the most popular songs and memories of bands will fade away eventually, the "glory" of the musicians becoming meaningless and unimportant.

I agree with Neapolitan...

Recently I have been thinking how many Beatles songs sound unmelodious and irritating to me (their later rambling songs), or overly simplistic and annoying (many of their earlier pop songs). For every song by The Beatles that I love, there are nine that I despise or dislike.

Many Beatles songs don't move me at all and sometimes it seems as if some of the music they made was only popular or given attention because it was by The Beatles, but not because the the songs themselves were so fanastic. Had a less famous band made much of their music, I think it would have been forgotten long ago.

So, I've been thinking that The Beatles are over-rated by music historians...perhaps because music buffs tend to be older and value bands that were once popular when they were young? Or maybe music critics got swept up by the hype over the Beatles, and it made them think much of the music was more appealing or interesting than it really was?

I don't think that many of the Beatles songs will be remembered or listened to in a couple generations. In fact, here's an article that says many teens now don't know who The Beatles are...and this, just 50 years after they were so popular!

And here's a fun story about how many kids using Twitter couldn't recognize who Paul McCartney was during his Grammy appearance:

Also over-rated: Lady Gaga

I like one and a half songs by her (of those I've heard). Today on the radio I heard "Poker Face" (a song that I half-dislike) and I really listened for the first time to her "rap" section in this song. And I thought, this isn't very good rap!

Lyrics:
"I won't tell you that I love you
Kiss or hug you
Cause I'm bluffin' with my muffin
I'm not lying I'm just stunnin' with my love-glue-gunning
Just like a chick in the casino"

It sounds like she's singing about a chicken! Unless she *wants* to be singing about a chicken, she should have scanned her lyrics to eliminate unintended meanings. And "I'm bluffin' with my muffin" sounds like something I'd expect from The Black Eyed Peas. Blech. Which reminds me...

Definitely over-rated: The Black Eyed Peas.
The first song I ever heard by them, I loathed it. The second song was no better. I hate every song by them that I've ever heard. And I mean despise. So I am shocked when I see their music videos getting 130 million views (unless the viewers are people like me who are listening just to try to figure out why the song has 130 million views ). I agree with wisdom's opinion of The Black Eyed Peas (expressed eloquently elsewhere on MusicBanter.)

Horror song: "Boom Boom Pow"
Makes me want to annihilate the planet, boom boom!
