Gotta remember though, if it wasn't for Pet Sounds, there may have never been a Sgt Pepper. Pet Sounds came out a full year before Sgt. pepper and Paul has stated repeatedly that it was a direct influence and a real prod for the Beatles to up their game. Pet Sounds might not be overtly psychedelic but it's still a pretty trippy record...I have to say too, as much as I love the Beatles, Sgt. Pepper is probably my least favorite record of theirs. I still listen to Pet Sounds all the time.
