It's not really bogus - it's just not democratic. If the US was truly democratic, we would simply count up every individual vote and the highest sum wins.
But the US is not and never has been a democracy (that is a myth or a semantic problem), it's always been a republic. Which, in a way, is a good thing because it gives more power to localities over the federal government. It's complicated.
Edit: Obama has now won. Unless a lingering problem mounts in Ohio or Florida like we saw in the 2000 and 2004 elections.
