Because they didn't look for it then.
I know several people who are the same age as me and autistic, all of them have only been diagnosed with it in the past 5 or 10 years. I've read what the symptoms are and I know I showed a lot of those things when I used to be a kid yet nobody even suggested once I may have a mild case of it.
Speak to anybody around the same age as me and they'll tell you they'd probably never even heard of autism until the late 80s / early 90s.
