I think this is actually more emotive than anything his son ever did. I also maintain that Rufus Wainwright and Ari Hest had more emotionally devastating versions of "Hallelujah," but I digress.
I never found this song depressing! I always just found it beautiful. It brings back memories for me as well.

Now this is depressing! In an amazingly beautiful way.

I never found this song depressing either! It always made me feel something else, don't even have a word for the feeling though.
