I'm suprised this poll is as close as it is. Slayer fans are pretty committed, and I understand that a knew generation likes them for never selling out, but the fact is Metallica is generally cited as the better band, and next to Black Sabbath, they're a probably the most influential metal band of all time.
Composition wise & artistically, Slayer's landmark album Reign in Blood doesn't hold a candle to Master of Puppets. I respect Slayer for what they are, but they were always more one dimensional than Metallica. And when Metallica began to venture forth into megastardom in the 90's, Slayer began to sputter.
I do have a question I would like answered though, it being, how much of the songwriting did Cliff Burton do? because Metallica's first three albums are untouchable.
