I've heard this a lot with the band Mastodon. That the lead singer sounds awful. He sounds like a death metal singer, doesn't he? Isn't that what they were going for...?

No, it just isn't appealing. I don't hear grit with James. I hear a guy with a really annoying voice trying to sing instead of shout. He has a metal voice, and he should stick to his strengths.
