That's not surprising really, when a band leaves its roots to go onto become one of the biggest bands in the world, the knives normally come out from dedicated fans for that type of music claiming they were not that great anyway.
Personally I think Metallica were one of the very best thrash bands and I wouldn't even call myself much of a Metallica fan either.

I never cared for thrash period to be honest, but Metallica reached a broader audience than any of the others. There are some modern elements of thrash out there fusing with elements of progressive and classical rock that I do currently like. As soon as some of these new metal bands realize they should direct their music more mainstream, then all for the better in my opinion.
