^ I agree with khfreek, that if an artist sounds convincing enough, it´s not really important whether they literally lived the experience they sing about or not.

These days it seems to be more fashionable than ever for artists to act as if they had it tough and grew up on the streets, but like the guy who is mentioned in the OP, lots of them had comfortable middle-class upbringings - Mick Jagger is another famous example.
