There is a very thin line between inspiration and plagiarism. Godsmack (especially Sully) has strong emotions for Alice in chains, thus some (intentional) similarities are present. Same thing is with probably the most "inspiring" (in the bad sense, see plagiarism) band in the world - KoRn. It's easy to say, that the act of ripping their style, sound, lyrics and even decisions quite frankly gave birth to Nu metal. It started with debuts of Coal Chamber, kittie, Nothingface and Sepultura's Roots. Downtuned guitars, easy, groovy, but nevertheless heavy riffs, Angst in lyrics, lack of solos (only recently solos became a small part of Nu metal bands. I'm not talking about the groups, which only flirted with Nu metal - Slayer, Sepultura etc.). All of these are present in the whole Nu metal scene.
