They were an alternative BACK THEN, i remember when MTV played Sweater song and Buddy holly, Weezer stood out from all the depressed grunge bands that were popular at the time.

I was in high school when Weezer's first album came out and remember it quite well. They were part of the whole mainstream "alternative" rock thing going on at the time, which included grunge. I've come to like some of that stuff over the years, but at the time it mostly seemed like lame knockoffs of the likes of the Pixies and Husker Du to me.
