And regarding Vikernes' dark ambient albums, I've heard that they're poor at best. I've only heard a couple of songs myself, but they totally sounded as if they were recorded in prison using only a synthesizer and a tape recorder.

They're really not nearly as bad as some people make them out to be. They actually somehow manage to overcome their limitations to feel epic. Especially the second.
