I've heard a lot of people consider the new Enthroned album to be irrelevant since it doesn't feature any original members. Although I can understand how that would make a band seem less authentic, why is this not the case in so many other instances?

Many other bands have no original members and are at the peak of their popularity

Nobody seems go give a **** that Napalm Death don't have any original members.

At first I found the vocals to be a turn off but intriguing. Before one song was over I saw the value and now I love Lutomysl

more progressive (2014)

more traditional (2008)

Briks to answer your question you messaged me about, it sounds to me like Burzum is kind of the opposite direction than the black metal I like to listen to. I'm more of a First Wave Black Metal guy and I like black metal that more closely resembles thrash and/or early death metal than what is considered black metal today. I'm also not big on the folk stuff either.

Of course, my exposure to both of those is limited, so maybe I'm wrong and I'm just listening to the wrong stuff. I know Burzum has some dark ambient albums and maybe I should check out those..

Oh well, I guess I'm more of a "shout the king's name from the top of a mountain while gazing at the beauty of Norwegian nature, after having killed a bunch of orks" metal kind of guy than you.

And regarding Vikernes' dark ambient albums, I've heard that they're poor at best. I've only heard a couple of songs myself, but they totally sounded as if they were recorded in prison using only a synthesizer and a tape recorder.

They're really not nearly as bad as some people make them out to be. They actually somehow manage to overcome their limitations to feel epic. Especially the second.

Oh and you might dig Burzum's Det Som Engang Var album. It's a lot more old school. That's the album, and not the song. The song is on a completely different album.

Also the back end has some of that ambient stuff you were curious about. Kind of like if Nintendo made the soundtrack to Lord of the Rings, but not as stupid as that sounds.

Alright so I've listened to quite a lot of that list Batty, and these are the highlights for me so far:
  • Deathcrush is easily the best album I've heard so far, really really like that one. "Chainsaw Guts****" is the most intense and brutal song I've ever heard.
  • I.N.R.I. by Sarcó***o is a close second. While I sincerely think Cainsaw Guts**** is the single most intense song ever, I.N.R.I. takes the cake on the most intense album ever. Those beastly death growls are so ****ing sick.
  • All of Bathory's first three albums are great. Now that I'm more exposed to what kind of black metal I like, these albums have kind of dropped out of favor for me, but they just don't have many flaws at all. They've got that perfect balance of lo-fi for the atmosphere, but it doesn't sound ****ty, it sounds really atmospheric, and those ambient tracks are really spooky. Also the sampling is stellar, like for the opening on "Call from the Grave" with the sounds of graves/tombs moving. I almost didn't notice that at first, but that's really cool.
  • Hellhammer is really a hit or miss for me, though they have some good riffs.
  • I just started listening to December Moon by Morbid and I'm still going through it, but it's pretty good. Got to love those beastly growls on "From the Dark."

^ This.

One black metal band that I listen to a lot (or probably the most) is Satyricon. Second-most is Burzum, but only certain songs.
