As you say yourself, no. It's not the "the" part that pisses me off, it's you lumping all homeless in as one species. Like people who lose their house because the bank takes it, people whose rent is too high and they have to move out, and junkies and winos are all the same to you? You get over it. I stand by what I said. At least call them "homeless people", not as if they were some alien race.
You're the one making it derogatory, not the indefinite article. That's just working for a living.
