Sanders is much closer to FDR than ever to Karl Marx. With a stretch, you could
call him a "soft-leftist" by established def. Using the phrase "by modern standards"
is pretty nigh useless if we are talking about sociological absolutes (which we should be).
If your seeking to win an argument, utilizing high brow language doesn't make you look intelligent, it just makes you look like a spoiled pompous arse. so please dispense with the "syntactical interpretation"

By todays standards FDR would be considered a hard leftist at least economically, Marxism would be considered the far left, as in way out there, though I'm sure you could find some philosophical strains of Marxism in Sanders beliefs if you look hard enough. He is after all a self declared socialist.

Hard left refers to the economic policies of left wing parties prior to the Thatcher/Reagan era before the third way polices of Blair, Clinton and Schroeder took over, which is generally considered the center left.

It does not refer to the far left policies of the Soviet Union and the Politburo. I already said I like Sander so stop getting so riled up.
