Major elements were raspy riffs, punk, metal, and alternative influence, lazy vocal delivery, hard drumming, and the angst effect that was specifically relatable to the anger of youths. But some of these can be traded to experiment with the sound EXCEPT for the teen anger. Without that, it's not grunge. And of course, many of these need to stay to truely retain the sound, but switching out a couple is experimentation.
