If you don't sing good songs you're not a good singer. If you don't play good songs on the guitar you're not a good guitarist.
Mariah Carey is not a good singer because her songs are bad. There's no other worthwhile criteria. Same goes for Yngie Malmsteen and Stevie Ray Vaughn. They are bad guitarists because their music is bad. If you can juggle chainsaws you don't need much of an asthetic but with music it's almost everything. You cannot be a good musician if you play bad music.
