You are the first person I've seen say it was Caress of Steel that changed their life. That album is more or less universally accepted as the low point of their prog days. The tour was called the "Down the Tubes" tour because they thought they were finished.

It undoubtedly has some excellent moments that hint at the genius that would be 2112, but I can't say I reach for Caress of Steel too often.
