Ja, it's very hypnotic and has a lot of density to unravel.

Yes. I don't even listen to noise and drone, but that album is nice. The individual sounds are intoxicating, and the way the album constantly evolves and devolves is fascinating. Especially if you're listening with headphones. There's always something happening in one ear that is dying, and then being reborn in a completely different way in the other.

Right I will give it a go as there are enough people saying they enjoy it for me to be wrong, but when I listened to it ages ago (years) it sounded like sh1t. Just noise.

In a way it is 'just' noise. Nothing wrong with that.

It undoubtedly has some excellent moments that hint at the genius that would be 2112, but I can't say I reach for Caress of Steel too often.
I can't be the only one who routinely listens to entire discographies, can I?

I'm a proud supporter of the complete discography run-through (Rush included). My point was that when I want a random Rush album, Caress of Steel rarely gets the pick.

I certainly have some kind of intuitive response to music that categorizes it as prog or non-prog (or something in-between like in this case). But if I take my two favourite 'classic' prog bands, King Crimson and Van der Graaf Generator, they sound nothing alike.
I guess Frownland is right and I'm just unable to hear past the poppiness. Although obviously my genre categorization doesn't influence my enjoyment (or lack thereof) of the music either way.
I define progressive rock primarily via its departure from typical pop-rock song structures and conventions of melody, harmony, rhythm, phrasing, etc. The departure doesn't have to be radical, just an intentional departure. Also, a large percentage of prog artists meld elements of other genres with rock, but I wouldn't say that's a necessary characteristic.

cool . . . I don't really do random/whim listening, though. If I did, I'd try to focus on albums and artists I don't hear very often. I have aversion to hearing the same thing too frequently.

I like some noise and drone, but i don't really care for Metal Machine Music. That's easily my least favorite Lou Reed album.
