I thought that the first scene was really good and intriguing, but what followed was kind of messy and could have been something special with more work.

I forgot to mention the Shining among my exceptions! Love it! Except for that scene with the dude with the bunny mask... or whatever was going on for a few seconds there, it's a great movie. The slow descent into madness for Nicholson's character is what makes it great. It's not so much whether or not he's going to murder someone any second and how.
