well it doesn't, actually. but if you plaster the world with advertising that says "make the most of your life! buy stuff and identify with products! your life is the only thing that should matter to you!" while simultaneously explaining that the earth very well could be a complete accident, it's easier to get people to forget about the implications of intelligent design in favour of stuffing their faces and watching porn.

EDIT: whereas if we are well aware that the earth is flat, stationary, and the sky revolves around us, we pretty much know for certain that our purpose here isn't solely of our own design.
