Is it appropriate, I ask, that an album that sounds like it was released by Franco Pepe Kalle was released on Valentine's Day, given the man's unashamed love of female booty? Although this is an album of covers I only know three of them, so can't give an informed opinion on whether the others are any good or not. What do you mean: I wouldn't know an informed opinion if it kicked me in the balls and robbed my wallet? Hah! Joke's on you, pal! I don't have a wallet! So, I've heard of Mary J Blige, but the only song I know by her is her own cover of U2's “One”, and that's where me and Miss B part company. This isn't “One”. Guess it's alright. I mean, it's soul and r&B, so don't ask me, you know? The songs sound ok, but that's about it really. The first one I know is Prince's “Diamonds and Pearls”, and well it's ok I guess. Kind of hard to get excited about anything on this album though. Boredom kicking in ... Most of these songs sound like they were boring originally so I really find it hard to care about her covering them.

Unfortunately (though unsurprisingly) it's Houston's long-drawn-out-dirge version of Dolly's “I Will Always Love You” she chooses to cover, so **** that, (I really had to stop myself fast-forwarding that ****e) and then neither Calvin Harris nor Taylor Swift interest me, so I don't give two ****s about their song, which brings me to the classic Marvin Gaye “What's Going on”, which really is such an unassailable (copyright Occulthawk MMXVII) classic it should be a capital offence to cover it. I guess it's a nice acoustic version, but not sure about the addition of Keever West (anything to Kanye?) when it wasn't a duet in the first place and this is supposedly her album. She's handled songs by male artists already so why not this? Anyway I miss the lush strings that accompanied and framed Marvin's version. And I know nothing about “Tennessee Whiskey”, except I assume it blows your head off. Nice kind of blues tune, but I really don't see the point in this album: the covers are all over the place, so what's the theme, if there is one? Meh.

Check out more from this artist? Nah
Check out more from this genre or subgenre? Probably
